We do this through community organizing and movement-building, centering healing through arts and culture, and creating a strong safety net rooted in community power. Mekong NYC is committed to uplifting the voices of those in our community who are most impacted and marginalized, in order to build a multiracial social justice movement.
Summary of Position:
Community organizers are on the frontlines of the organization, providing direct services to Mekong NYC community members on issues such as accessing critical safety net programs, housing, immigration, etc. Additionally, organizers support Mekong’s community organizing work by engaging our community members in base-building, direct-action campaigns, movement-building, and coalition-building. Organizers also support the planning and implementation of arts & culture initiatives and events.
Position Responsibilities:
Social Services and Advocacy
Enroll community members in health insurance plans through the New York State of Health Navigator program
Assist community members with issues such as accessing government benefits including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Social Security Income (SSI), etc; housing displacement; immigration and deportation matters, etc.
Accompany community members at in-person appointments, court hearings, etc., and provide interpretation/translation services as needed
Outreach to engage community members in events hosted by Mekong NYC and other partners
Translate materials related to social services
Organizing and Campaigns
Work with the Organizing and Campaigns team on specific campaigns to promote and support member engagement in these campaigns.
Conduct regular outreach to build awareness and build relationships with community members; and identify and recruit community members to be part of Mekong NYC’s membership.
Plan and facilitate town halls, community meetings, campaign actions, and training such as Know Your Rights sessions. Most of these events will be conducted in English, Vietnamese, and Cambodian.
Represent Mekong NYC in collaborations involving other organizations and entities that are working towards similarly aligned goals.
Translate organizing and campaign-related materials
Arts & Culture
Support in the planning and implementation of arts & culture initiatives and events.
Provide interpretation and translation at arts and culture events.
Required Qualifications:
Bilingual fluency in Vietnamese and English, both verbal and written.
Commitment to social justice, community organizing, and community power building.
Experience working with people facing challenging conditions such as mental illness, substance abuse, homelessness, and/or incarceration.
Experience with case management, social work, and/or community organizing preferred.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage diverse projects and responsibilities.
Positive, proactive, and able to work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Position Salary and Benefits:
This is a full-time position with a salary of $57,062. Mekong NYC offers a competitive benefits package including: medical, dental, and vision insurance; a 401(k) retirement plan; and a generous paid time off schedule. Our office currently operates on a hybrid schedule, and staff are required to work mostly on-site, with some days of the week reserved for remote work.
